About RTI

Know what RTI can do.

What is RTI?

The Right to Information Act, 2005 lets citizens request information held by public authorities. It is used to ask for records, status, reasons, dates, rules, copies of documents, and action-taken reports.

Who can file?

Any citizen can file an RTI request. A request should be clear, point-wise, and directed to the Public Information Officer of the correct public authority.

What can you ask?

  • Status of an application, complaint, work, benefit, or file.
  • Copies of orders, estimates, tenders, registers, notices, and file movement.
  • Reasons recorded for delay or rejection.
  • Rules, timelines, and responsible office details.

What should you avoid?

RTI is for existing records and official information. It should not ask for opinions, explanations that are not recorded, private third-party data, or questions that require creating new information.

30-day rule

Most RTI replies are due within 30 days. If the request is transferred to another authority, timelines may vary. Life or liberty cases have faster timelines.

Appeal rights

If there is no reply, incomplete information, wrong denial, or unsatisfactory response, the citizen can prepare a First Appeal under Section 19(1).

Fee and BPL

The usual application fee is Rs 10. BPL applicants can request fee exemption when applicable. RightAsk shows this clearly in the draft.

PIO and authority

The PIO is the officer responsible for processing the RTI. Choosing the correct authority matters, so RightAsk suggests an office but asks the user to review before filing.

Privacy

The prototype does not collect Aadhaar, PAN, OTP, payment information, or real address data. It uses safe placeholders and synthetic filing results.

Prototype Guide

What our product does.

The problem

Citizens often know the issue but not the correct department, RTI language, deadlines, or appeal process. This creates friction before they can even ask for information.

Where users get stuck

  • They do not know what to ask.
  • They do not know which authority holds the record.
  • They miss the 30-day deadline.
  • They cannot judge if the reply is complete.

The solution

RightAsk converts plain problems into formal, point-wise RTI drafts, gives authority guidance, exports a PDF, tracks the reply window, analyzes responses, and prepares appeal drafts.

End-to-end flow

  • Demo sign-in
  • Choose issue category
  • Describe the problem
  • Review authority and questions
  • Generate draft and PDF
  • Simulate filing
  • Track response
  • Analyze reply
  • Prepare First Appeal

This prototype is safe for a hackathon demo. It does not contact any government service.

  • Government filing is simulated.
  • Reference numbers are synthetic.
  • Payment is not collected.
  • Department replies are synthetic demo responses.
  • No Aadhaar, PAN, OTP, real address, or private identity data is used.
